America’s River Corporation is excited to announce this year’s entertainment for America’s River Festival presented by American Trust & Savings Bank, held in the Port of Dubuque June 10-11, 2016.
Friday night features, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (“Fishin’ In The Dark” & “Mr. Bojangles”) with special up and coming guests Jon Pardi (“Up All Night” & “Head Over Boots”), and Gunnar & The Grizzly Boys (“Standard American” & “Pedal to the Floor”).
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band: Celebrating their Golden (50th) Anniversary together, the iconic and profoundly influential Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, often cited as a catalyst for an entire movement in Country Rock and American Roots Music, continues to add to their legendary status.
With multi-platinum and gold records, strings of top ten hits such as “Fishin’ In The Dark” and “Mr. Bojangles”, multiple Grammy, IBMA, CMA Awards and nominations, the band’s accolades continue to accumulate. Their groundbreaking “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” album has been inducted into the U.S. Library of Congress as well as the Grammy Hall of Fame. NGDB’s recording of “Mr. Bojangles” was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2010. In 2014, “Fishin’ In the Dark” was certified platinum for digital downloads by the RIAA. Today, NGDB (Jeff Hanna, Jimmie Fadden, Bob Carpenter, John McEuen) continue their non-stop touring in their 50th year together. Recent tour stops included Stagecoach, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival and many more.
The plans for their 50th Anniversary will be extensive. On September 14th, 2015 they played to a SOLD OUT crowd at the Historic Ryman Auditorium with some close friends to film a 50th Anniversary Special to air on PBS starting March of 2016.
Jon Pardi: “If you can take a piece of life and put it in a song,” says Jon Pardi, “it’s going to be a good song— especially if it’s from the heart.”
It’s a formula he has followed since his days learning his craft with bands in his native California, and in the years since, he has become, both on stage and in the studio, one of country music’s most exciting young performers.
Pardi and co-producer/collaborator Bart Butler have captured both the craft and the energy in an elevensong introduction that hearkens to classic country’s best musical and lyrical elements while sounding as fresh as anything out there.
“People ask me who I’d like to open up for,” Pardi says with a smile, “and I tell them I’ve already been lucky enough to have opened for several artists I look up to.”
It’s a list that includes Alan Jackson, Dwight Yoakam, Dierks Bentley, Gary Allan and Luke Bryan, singers who appreciate the kind of influences Pardi brings to the table—echoes of the crisp Bakersfield sound of Owens and Merle Haggard, hints of the driving beat of Waylon Jennings and the excitement of Jerry Lee Lewis. He brings all of it together and puts his unique stamp on it, topping it off with just a bit of swagger that gives a little edge to his undeniable appeal.
Gunnar & The Grizzly Boys: As American as apple pie, Gunnar & The Grizzly Boys make country music by nature, not by design. Their songs travel straight from the northern pines and fruit orchards of Michigan to your radio speakers and local honky-tonks. The honest storytelling instantly grabs your attention while the music hits you in the gut like a double shot of whiskey. The energy of a live Grizzly Boys show explodes into the audience like an electrifying dose of adrenalin.
Saturday night will rock the crowd with co-headliners REO SpeedWagon (“I Can’t Fight This Feeling” & “Keep On Loving You”) and Cheap Tick (“Surrender” & “I Want You to Want Me”) and with special guest Pablo Cruise (“Love Will Find A Way” & “Whatcha Gonna Do”).
REO Speedwagon: Formed in 1967, signed in 1971, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon is a band where the main constant over the decades is a never-ending desire to give their all to their fans, year in and year out.
Formed loosely in the late ‘60s at college in Champaign, IL, REO (named after the precursor to the light truck) rode to gigs in station wagons, hopping from small gigs to even tinier gigs, just to get their name out. It worked, as fans quickly realized there was much more going on here than your average college party band.
By the early ‘70s, the band’s unrelenting drive, as well as non-stop touring and recording, jump-started the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. It carved a path that was eventually followed by STYX, Kansas, Cheap Trick and more. Platinum albums and freeform FM radio staples such as “Ridin’ The Storm Out” followed, setting the stage for 1980’s explosive Hi Infidelity. REO rode the top of the charts with a RIAA-certified 22 million albums sold in the U.S. and 40 million around the globe, with a string of gold and platinum records and international hit singles.
Cheap Trick: With over 5,000 performances spanning four decades and 20 million records sold worldwide, Cheap Trick is undoubtedly one of the most influential classic rock groups of the past 50 years. The band was formed in 1974 and while it has evolved throughout the years, Cheap Trick has continued to reach mainstream and critical success. Hits such as “I Want You To Want Me,” “Dream Police,” and
“Surrender” have cemented the group as one of America’s top rock ‘n’ roll bands of all time
Pablo Cruise: In 1975 Pablo Cruise released its first A&M album simply entitled Pablo Cruise. The album cover was shot in the tropical gardens of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park and it featured a huge gorilla standing front and center. The band, David Jenkins (guitars & vocals), Cory Lerios (keyboards & vocals), Steve Price (drums) & Bud Cockrell (bass & vocals) was nowhere in sight. At that point there was a bit of a mystique as to who Pablo Cruise really was. When asked, “who’s Pablo,” the band, which is a quartet, would answer, “he’s the guy in the middle.” When asked what Pablo Cruise meant, the well-rehearsed answer went something like this, “Pablo, represents an honest, real, down to earth individual; and Cruise, depicts his fun loving, easy going attitude towards life.” In essence that’s what Pablo Cruise’s music is all about. Honest, real, down to earth vocals, accompanied by fun yet elegant, infectious grooves. To hear Pablo Cruise on record is one thing, but to experience the band live is an exhilarating event.
